A forecast from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) expects road and rail projects to boost the regions construction output growth over the next five years.
Investments in the High Speed 2 Rail link (£11 billion) and a road improvement programme (at £1.8 billion) will make a substantial contribution to this gain. This includes a £335 million upgrade to the M6. These big projects will give a forecasted annual growth of 1.4% per year over the next five years with an estimated 14,000 new jobs being created.
The Construction Skills Network (CSN) forecasts that in demand roles for between 2017 and 2021 will be carpenters, electricians and construction process managers. There is also a significant expected demand for scaffolders, labourers and surveyors.
The public non-housing sector is forecast to grow at an annual average rate of 3.6% in the short-term. A number of large projects will support expansion including the £500m Birmingham University campus redevelopment and a £37m science and health building at Coventry University, due for completion this year.
